There are some places that stay with you long after the trip is over, and for us, Jurassic Valley at Kualoa Ranch on Oahu is one of them. Jurassic Valley, a lush stretch of green cliffs and ocean views felt almost unreal – like stepping straight into a movie set.

And that’s exactly what it is. From films like Jurassic Park and Jurassic World to TV shows like Lost and Hawaii Five-0, Kualoa Ranch has been Hollywood’s Hawaiian backdrop for decades.

On our visit, we had reservations for the Movie Sites Bus Tour, and it ended up being one of our favorite experiences of the whole trip.

The bus tour was easy and comfortable, but what made it unforgettable was the combination of storytelling, filming locations, and incredible views of both the valley and coastline. From standing in front of the dinosaur bones in Jurassic Valley to wandering through a WWII bunker filled with movie memorabilia, the entire experience felt like an adventure.

Where is Jurassic Valley at Kualoa Ranch?

Kualoa Ranch is located on Oahu’s windward (eastern) coast, about a 45-minute drive from Waikiki.

Driving There

The drive itself is part of the fun. For our group, we rented an SUV for the day at our hotel, and my son-in-law who drove us turned on Spotify’s Hawaiian playlist for the drive! The scenery is beautiful – you’ll pass by sweeping ocean views, charming small towns,  lush mountains, and several spots where you may want to pull over for photos along the way.

One of the highlights before even arriving at the ranch is getting a picture perfect glimpse of the famous island commonly called Chinaman’s Hat (Mokoliʻi Island).

If you’re not renting a car, Kualoa Ranch also offers a paid shuttle option from select Waikiki hotels, making it easy to visit even without driving.

Choosing the Best Kualoa Ranch Tour

We considered things like comfort level, travel style, and who was in our group (kids, adults) when deciding which tour to book.

The tour was fun, easy, and packed with amazing scenery from beginning to end.

Our guide had worked at the ranch for years and made the experience even better. She was enthusiastic, funny, and incredibly knowledgeable about both the ranch’s history and the movies filmed there. Her stories made the valley come alive.

The bus makes several stops along the way, giving visitors time to take pictures and enjoy the scenery. Even if you are not a huge movie fan, the landscapes alone make the experience worthwhile.

History of Kualoa Ranch

Kualoa Ranch isn’t just about movies – it’s a place with deep Hawaiian roots.

The land was purchased in 1850 by Dr. Gerrit Judd, a missionary doctor who became an advisor to King Kamehameha III. It started as a cattle ranch and remains privately owned to this day, with a mission to preserve the natural beauty and cultural history of the land.

Over the years, Hollywood discovered its cinematic potential. From Jurassic Park and Jurassic World to 50 First Dates, Lost, Jumanji, and Hawaii Five-0, the ranch has been a star in its own right. Today, the tours offer a mix of history, storytelling, and behind-the-scenes glimpses into its Hollywood legacy.
