Hawaii Favorites: Best Things to Do in Waikiki

Diamond Head Hawaii Hike view

Planning a trip to Hawaii is exciting — there’s so much to see and do that it can be hard to choose where to start. For our recent family trip to Oahu, we stayed in Waikiki and built a flexible itinerary that worked for everyone — a mix of sightseeing, adventure, and downtime at the beach. With both adults and kids in our group, we wanted something relaxed but still full of great experiences.

After a week of exploring, here are some of the best things to do in Waikiki — from iconic hikes and tours to great food, shopping, and fun local activities.

Waikiki: Where to Stay

Diamond Head Side-Twin Fin Hotel Waikiki

Waikiki is only about a two-mile stretch of beach, but it’s packed with hotels, restaurants, and endless things to do. Our favorite area to stay is on the Diamond Head side of Waikiki (east end) where there’s more green space. This area is a great spot for families of all ages — with hotels just across the street from Kuhio Beach, which is protected by a seawall for calm swimming.

It’s also close to Kapiʻolani Park, the Honolulu Zoo and the Waikiki Aquarium, offering a more relaxed atmosphere while still being just a short walk from all the action.

1. Hike Diamond Head Crater

Best things to do in Hawaii Diamond Head Hike Trail

One of Oahu’s most iconic experiences, and definitely one our group was looking forward to — is the Diamond Head hike with incredible views of Waikiki and the Pacific Ocean. The trail is considered moderate, but it feels more challenging with some steep sections near the top and the heat, depending on when you’re hiking.

Reservations are required and can be made up to 30 days in advance through the Hawaii State Parks website.

Tip: Go early in the morning when it’s cooler and less crowded — and don’t forget water and sunscreen!

2. Visit Jurassic Valley at Kualoa Ranch

The “Jurassic Valley” tour at Kualoa Ranch was the highlight of our trip. Just a 45-minute scenic drive from Waikiki, Kualoa Ranch is one of Hawaii’s most beautiful and popular attractions — and it’s easy to see why.

Famous for its movie tours and breathtaking views, it’s a great day trip for groups and families. We booked the 90-minute Movie Sites & Ranch Tour (bus) and loved the exploring the lush Jurassic Valley, film sites and WWII bunker.

3. Fireworks on the Beach

Every Friday night around 7:45 p.m., the sky lights up with a free fireworks show at the Hilton Hawaiian Village. You can watch from the beach or nearby hotels — it’s a fun way to end the week in Waikiki. Bring a blanket and some snacks and enjoy the show with an ocean view.

4. Rent a Scoot Coupe

For a fun and scenic way to explore Honolulu, rent a Scoot Coupe — a bright, two-seater mini car that’s part scooter, part convertible. Some of the young adults in our group rented them twice because they were that fun! They loved cruising along the coast and stopping for photos with amazing views of Diamond Head.

We rented from Hawaiian Style Rentals & Sales, which offers Scoot Coupes, mopeds, and bikes. Their website also has colorful downloadable Waikiki and Honolulu maps that are super handy for planning your route.

5. ABC Stores (Local Favorite Stop!)

You’ll see ABC Stores everywhere in Waikiki — and they’re a favorite for visitors. They carry just about everything: snacks, drinks, toiletries, souvenirs, sunscreen, and even ready-to-eat food. It’s so convenient to pop in for water bottles, a quick breakfast, or last-minute items.

Tip: Some stores even have small delis or hot food counters, and they’re open late.

6. Food & Dining Highlights

Waikiki has amazing food options for every budget. Dining can be on the pricey side, but there are plenty of great casual spots too.

  • Duke’s Waikiki: Famous Hawaiian BBQ lunch buffet with poke bowls, short ribs, kalua pork, and local produce.
  • Tiki’s Grill & Bar: Great for group dinners and tropical drinks.
  • Thai Tacos Waikiki: Food trailer with great Asian, Mexican & Thai cuisine.
  • Steak Shack: Affordable plate options of steak, chicken, rice and salad greens.
  • Lulu’s Waikiki: Fun, casual spot for breakfast or dinner with ocean views.
  • Leonard’s Bakery: Don’t miss their famous malasadas (Portuguese-style donuts) — fresh, warm, and absolutely worth the line!

Tip: Make dinner reservations for restaurants in advance — we used OpenTable a few weeks before our trip.
