Visiting Hawaii doesn’t have to be expensive — there are plenty of free things to do in Waikiki that let you soak up the sun, culture, and local vibes while watching your budget. From scenic beaches and Hawaiian music to fireworks over the ocean, here are our favorite free experiences that are fun for the whole family or group.
1. Waikiki’s Beaches
Enjoy a beach day on Waikiki’s world-famous stretch of sand. All beaches in Waikiki are public – and there are a variety of beaches with different vibes. You can relax and watch the surfers in the mornings or take a swim. Our favorite family-friendly spot is Kuhio Beach, on the Diamond Head side of Waikiki. The beach is protected by a seawall, creating calm swimming areas perfect for kids. It’s also near Kapiʻolani Park and the Honolulu Zoo, so you can easily plan a beach day followed by a stroll through the park or a picnic under the palm trees.
Other popular nearby beaches include Queen’s Surf Beach for sunsets and Fort DeRussy Beach Park for wider sand and fewer crowds.
Tip: In Hawaii, you can only use “reef-safe” sunscreen.
2. Watch Free Hula Shows & Hawaiian Music
You don’t need to book a luau to experience authentic Hawaiian hula and live music.
- The Kuhio Beach Hula Show takes place on the beach in front of the Duke Kahanamoku statue on Tuesdays and Saturdays at 6:30-7:30 p.m.
- The Aloha Friday Show at International Market Place features local performers in a fun outdoor setting.
- The Ala Moana Centerstage Hula Show happens daily at 5:00 p.m., featuring Hawaiian music and traditional dance.
These performances are a great way to experience island culture — and best of all, they’re completely free.

3. Enjoy Friday Night Fireworks
Every Friday night around 7:45 p.m., you’ll see people gathering up and down the beach to catch the spectacular fireworks show that is launched from the beach at the Hilton Hawaiian Village. The show lasts about 10 minutes but creates such a fun, festive atmosphere along the shoreline. Arrive a little early to grab a good spot — or enjoy the view from your hotel balcony if you’re staying nearby.
4. Explore Kapiʻolani Park and the Waikiki Promenade
Stretch your legs and take in the scenery with a walk through Kapiʻolani Park, one of Honolulu’s oldest and largest green spaces. The park is right next to the ocean and offers incredible views of Diamond Head.
You can also walk or bike along Kalākaua Avenue, the main strip lined with shops, restaurants, and street performers. Watching the sunset here is a classic Waikiki moment — and it doesn’t cost a thing.
5. Visit the Honolulu Zoo and Aquarium Area
While entry to the Honolulu Zoo and Waikiki Aquarium isn’t free, the surrounding area is great for a leisurely walk or picnic. You’ll often see local musicians or families enjoying the shaded park areas nearby, and the ocean views from the sea wall are beautiful — especially at sunrise or early morning.
6. Browse Local Shops & Art
Take a stroll through the International Market Place, Royal Hawaiian Center, or Waikiki Beach Walk for window shopping and live performances. Even if you don’t buy anything, the atmosphere is lively and fun — with music, handcrafted goods, and street art scattered throughout the area.
7. ABC Stores (Budget-Friendly Favorite)
You’ll spot ABC Stores on nearly every corner in Waikiki. While technically not “free,” they’re great for travelers on a budget — with affordable snacks, drinks, sunscreen, souvenirs, and even fresh food. They’re perfect for grabbing something quick before heading to the beach or watching the fireworks.
