If you want to start running or get back into running, the Nike Run Club app is one of the best ways to start. Its 4-week beginner plan makes running approachable and fun, with guided runs led by Coach Bennett that help you ease into a consistent routine.
I’ve been following the plan myself, and I love how it blends motivation, flexible pacing, and real progress tracking. In this post, I’ll share my experience with the plan, tips for affordable running gear, and how you can build up to training for a 5K run once you finish the first four weeks.
Nike Run Club app
What makes the Nike Run Club beginner plan so great is that it doesn’t feel overwhelming. Each week you have 2-3 running sessions that build gently on the last, and the guided audio runs make it feel like you have your own personal coach running beside you. Each week, there is a mix of types of runs — some might be a short 7-10 minute “Easy” run, or a speed run, or a longer run — so you can look at the plan for the week and fit the runs into your schedule.
4-Week Running Plan: Guided Runs
The real game-changer for me are the guided runs with Chris Bennett, Nike’s Global Head Coach. His coaching style is upbeat, motivating, and encouraging — without being pushy. It feels like he’s right there reminding you to go at your own pace and celebrate showing up. (The app also gives you the option to do the workout without the guided run.)
Surprisingly I enjoy the speed run days. They sound intense at first, but they’re actually one of the most fun parts of the plan. Coach Bennett takes you through short 1–2 minute intervals, with a short recovery period in between each one. While I like the longer runs too, the speed run intervals keep you engaged and the sessions goes by fast. You can pause the workout anytime for a quick stretch or break, so you can really go at your own pace.
Nike Run Playlist
If you like listening to music while you run — the app lets you play your favorite playlists in the background during guided runs. The coach’s voice blends in lightly with the music, and when he stops talking, your playlist takes over. Nike even has its own upbeat Spotify Run Playlist that’s perfect for keeping your energy up.
Stats
And after every run, the app gives you detailed stats — pace, distance, splits, and interval times. Even though I’m not a fast runner, it’s so motivating to see those small improvements and progression each week.
Affordable Running Gear Favorites

You don’t need a lot of fancy equipment to start running, but having a few comfortable, budget-friendly essentials makes a difference. You can find great deals online, or at Marshalls in the activewear section. See My Top Marshalls Finds.
Here are some suggestions to get started:
- Shoes: A good pair of entry-level running shoes like Nike Revolution 6 or my favorite ASICS Gel Venture running shoes that have a little more tread so you can run on trails too.
- Clothing: Moisture-wicking tops and leggings or shorts (I love budget picks from Marshalls).
- Samsung Galaxy or other smart watch
- Accessories:
- Waist pack for your phone and keys
- Reflective gear for early morning or evening runs
- Wireless earbuds
- A cap or sunglasses
- Collapsible water bottle
- Waist pack for your phone and keys
These basics keep me comfortable without spending a lot — and that means I can focus on my runs instead of my gear.
Just Do It
What I love about this 4-week plan is how approachable it feels. There’s no pressure to be fast, no competition — just you, your music, and your run. Whether it’s your first time lacing up or you’re coming back after a break, the Nike Run Club app makes it fun and encouraging to build a running habit.
If you’ve been thinking about getting started in running for fitness, I say “Just Do It!” Download the app, choose the 4-week Nike Run Club beginner plan, and take it one run at a time. The progress comes faster than you think.
What’s Next After the 4-Week Beginner Plan
Once you finish the 4-week Get Started plan, you’ll have a great running base — so it’s the perfect time to move on to a 5K training plan. The Nike Run Club app offers several options that gradually increase distance and endurance while keeping the same supportive coaching style.
The 5K plan usually lasts 6–8 weeks and mixes easy runs, recovery days, and short speed workouts to help you build confidence and stamina. Even if you’re not planning to race, training for a 5K gives you a fun, realistic goal to stay consistent with your running routine.
